Dalmatian Exercise Information

If you are unable to exercise your dog, then you will have to find someone who would love to, daily. Walking alone may not be enough exercise for your Dalmatian - - they need to run.

Runs

Dalmatians love to run. Known as coach dogs who ran alongside horse-drawn carriages, and later ahead of horse-drawn fire reels to stop the traffic at intersections, they appeared never to tire. They cannot get too much exercise. Even 4 to 6 month old puppies can run 20 km daily. A fenced-in yard allows them to run and play to their heart’s content, especially if they have another dog as a companion or an owner with a good ball-throwing arm.

Blueroof Dalmatians go on 50 km runs twice daily. Dalmatians need at least two long runs each week. If there’s no place they can run free, run them beside your bike or car (but don't tie them to the car!) at about 10 - 12 km/h along a little-travelled road, track, or some such place.

Walks

Two long walks a day are essential if they can’t run free. They should be allowed opportunities to sniff as they are natural trackers. Given the right diet and the right amount of exercise, Dalmatians can live to 13 to 15 years. Without this, their life expectancy is in the range of 7 years (according to the Dalmation Research Foundation).
